I am currently doing an internship at The Orange Peel in Asheville. It is a music venue so I help with security matters during and after concerts. I love music so this is a perfect internship for me. This weekend, George Thorogood and the Destroyers played. Their opening act was Cross Canadian Ragweed which is really cool because I am a big fan. They are really nice guys. During the concert, I stood at the edge of the stage where the entrance to the backstage area was. I had to make sure that nobody jumped up on stage, got in fights, tried to slip backstage, etc. Most of the people that came to see George Thorogood and the Destroyers were their original fans. That made the majority of the crowd 40 - 50 year old men. I thought that it would be a pretty easy concert to manage but I quickly learned that drunken, 40-year-old men do not like to listen to 21-year-old women when it came to regulating them. A few people did not understand why I could not just let them backstage so they could hang out with George Thorogood. It is pretty intimidating at first, having to stand up to someone who is twice your age and size. This internship has really taught me how to be stern and stand my ground. I don’t have the physical intimidation going for me so I have to have an intimidating personality while working in this criminal justice position. I have really become good at it! Anyway, at the end of the night, no huge problems happened so everything was OK. The concert was great and I got to watch a good show so that was fun. I met George Thorogood at the end of the night which was neat. I love this internship!
