The Honors College

Over 1,400 students walk The Honors Path by joining The Honors College at Western Carolina University. They are of all types—from art majors to Teaching Fellows, from intramural Ultimate Frisbee golfers and video gamers to varsity athletes—but they all have one thing in common: the curiosity, character, and will to achieve.

Living in Honors, many students start out in Balsam Hall, get their academic start with Honors courses or by signing Honors contracts or customizing their courses or majors, and then move ahead with funded undergraduate research or via the interdisciplinary Special Studies degree or Pre-Professional Programs.

Honors students also may choose to join The Honors College Board of Directors and, working with the dean, run their college in partnership with the off-campus Honors College Advisory Board. When they complete their studies, they wear the Honors Medallion and graduate with The Honors College Diploma.

Tyler Jones, Undergraduate Researcher

Honors College student Tyler Jones (above) is one of 75 WCU students whose research projects were accepted for presentation at the 2010 National Conference on Undergraduate Research, which will be held April 15-17 at the University of Montana. Jones’ project is “Variations in Lewis Acidity of Trivalent Boron Systems with Amines.”

WCU students rank second in the nation in the number of their research projects that were accepted for this year’s NCUR. A total of 319 colleges and universities will be sending students to the conference. The Honors College oversees WCU’s participation in NCUR each year.

Here is a complete list of accepted projects for 2010 from WCU.
