Western Carolina University’s Pride of the Mountains Marching Band has been selected to participate in the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade®, to be held Jan. 1 in Pasadena, Calif. The university community is thrilled at this latest honor for the marching band, and we’re offering alumni, family and friends two opportunities to support the band in this historic accomplishment:
“America’s New Year’s Celebration” is held annually in conjunction with the Rose Bowl® college football game. The parade is seen by hundreds of thousands of spectators and by millions of television viewers around the world. The parade features elaborate floats, equestrian units and other attractions and the top high school and college marching bands from around the world.
Parade representatives selected the Pride of the Mountains to participate because of the band’s “excellent musical talents, entertainment value and performance skills,” as well as the “outstanding directorship” of Bob Buckner, marching band director.
The Pride of the Mountains is widely regarded as one of the top marching bands in the Southeast for its elaborate field shows. The band was the 2009 recipient of the Sudler Trophy, the nation’s ultimate honor for college and university bands.
